Firearms Policy

Fairbankslist does not sell firearms.
We are a free local classifieds board. We don't sell, buy, own, inspect, store, ship, or transfer firearms, and we are not a party to any sale. We don't process payments for firearms. Buyers and sellers deal directly with each other and are solely responsible for following all federal, Alaska, and local laws and for completing all required paperwork.
Before you sell
- Only sell a firearm you legally own and are legally allowed to sell.
- It is a federal crime to sell or give a firearm or ammunition to anyone you know, or have reasonable cause to believe, is prohibited from having one, for example because of a felony conviction, a domestic-violence conviction or protective order, or certain other reasons.
- Sales between residents of different states must go through a federally licensed dealer (FFL). On Fairbankslist, sell only to Alaska residents, in person.
- Check the buyer's government photo ID to confirm their identity, age, and Alaska residency. Federal law sets minimum ages (for example, handguns may not be sold to anyone under 18).
- Recommended: complete the sale at a local licensed dealer (FFL), who runs the federal background check and keeps the records. Many dealers do private-party transfers for a small fee. It's the safest choice for both sides.
- Keep a written bill of sale with the date, both names, the make, model, and serial number.
Before you buy
- Only buy if you are legally allowed to own the firearm.
- Never buy a firearm for someone else who can't legally buy it themselves (a "straw purchase"). It's a serious federal crime.
- Make sure the serial number is present and unaltered.
Allowed in the Firearms & Ammo category
- Rifles, shotguns, and handguns that are legal to own and transfer in Alaska without federal registration.
- Ammunition, magazines, optics, holsters, cases, safes, cleaning and reloading supplies, and other accessories.
Not allowed anywhere on Fairbankslist
- Items regulated under the National Firearms Act: machine guns, suppressors/silencers, short-barreled rifles or shotguns, "any other weapons," and destructive devices.
- Firearms without a serial number, or with an altered or removed serial number. This includes homemade or 3D-printed guns, and kits or parts sold to make one.
- Devices that make a gun fire automatically, such as auto sears, "switches," and conversion kits.
- Explosives, grenades, and incendiary devices.
- Offers to ship firearms, or sales to anyone outside Alaska.
- Anything you're not legally allowed to sell.
How we handle firearms listings
- Firearms listings must be posted in the Firearms & Ammo category, never hidden in another category.
- Sellers confirm a legal declaration each time they post or edit. Buyers confirm one before contacting a seller.
- New firearms listings are reviewed before they appear.
- We may remove any listing or account at any time, and we cooperate with law enforcement.
Meeting safely
Meet in a public place. Many police stations have lobbies or parking lots for exchanges; call ahead. Never meet somewhere you feel unsafe, and transport firearms unloaded and cased. See our safety tips.
This page is general information, not legal advice. Laws change; check current federal (ATF) and Alaska law, or ask a licensed dealer or attorney.
